Each year on June 9th, IAF, ILAC, their members and partners, and other organizations in the field of conformity assessment celebrate World Accreditation Day (WAD) to acknowledge the contributions of accreditation to societal well-being. The theme of WAD 2021 will be Accreditation: Supporting the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 17 SDGs represent the core of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which recognizes the interconnectivity of the various challenges facing sustainable development: for instance, poverty and inequality, environmental degradation, climate change, and health threats such as unsafe drinking water and disease. Quality infrastructure (QI) activities, including accreditation, standardization, conformity assessment, metrology and market surveillance, play an integral role in combating these challenges.
Accreditation provides the confidence that conformity assessment bodies are reliable and impartial. Accredited conformity assessment activities can help ensure the safety and reliability of products, improve workplace and infrastructure safety, and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of conformity assessment for providing confidence in medical devices and testing, while mutual recognition arrangements like the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA) and ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) help ensure their timely delivery around the world. These benefits are illustrated through case studies and research on the Public Sector Assurance and Business Benefits websites.
This year, IAF and ILAC are holding contests to develop the poster and video to be used for WAD 2021 – Accreditation: Supporting the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals celebrations.
The winner for each contest will receive 1,500 USD, while the two-runners up for each contest will receive 500 USD each.
